The original British Takeaway still has two or three outlets in Abingdon.
For the moment there is no Fish and Chips takeaway in Abingdon Town Centre. New owners took over Smarts Fish & Chips and they seemed to be doing OK. So I am not sure what is now happening behind the screen.
Smarts on Peachcroft are still there open as usual.
As are Salami’s on Ock Street.
I think Smarts is just having a refurb as, to be fair, it was looking a bit battered.
Let’s face it, the chips are down for this plaice 😉
The Takeaways seem to be doing very good business in Abingdon. I counted on my walk into town yesterday. There are 12 hot food takeaway outlets between Fair acres and the War Memorial…..a distance of not more than Ikm? ( This of course does not take into account those in the Town Centre itself, and on the other entry routes.)
No need for signs and directions……just follow the litter trail and the discarded food debris.
I really don’t rate the chips in Abingdon. Yet to find a decent chippy.
Last time I spoke to the owner he was complaining about his rent being to high? Watch that space?? On another subject I’m taking odds on bets that good news will be announced by Scottish widow !!
Black Flag, I can recommend Tung Sun on Reynolds Way – a great dual Chinese takeaway and traditional chippy.
I’ve noticed that planning notices have started popping up in the window of the empty unit on market square (ex-Stroll In) to say a request in usage has been made to allow a cafe…
another café … yawn.
Black Flag – we have had some very good ones from Smarts at Peachcroft recently (they were rubbish a few years ago but seem to have upped their game).
Captainkaos2 Has the widow found another husband?
The Stroll In cafe proposal includes extraction which as always been a hurdle to get past the Listed Buildings folk so this is by no means a done deal any time soon. At the moment Added Ingredients have objected (predictably) and the Environmental Team aren’t keen either.
The bottom line is that unless the unit is split in two and rented to two companies who need a smaller space, there is no national or local retailer who wants this size of A1 unit. It has been advertised for a long long time now and the people making this application, Rachel and Robert Broadbent are the only ones to stick their necks out on it.
In other planning news, the dentist on Stert Street wants to use the upstairs as a dentist as well as the ground floor so his business must be doing ok.
Why on earth would Added Ingredients object?
Reburb it is, going to diversify, installing pizza oven I’m told.
Maybe there is positive correlation between the burgeoning custom for takeaway food and the increasimg need for dental care?
There will probably need to be an increase in Council Tax soon to cover the extra costs of street cleaning.
To clarify, Added Ingredients has not objected, simply commented re general concerns re where the extraction units from cooking food may be when there are residential units above and next door (where my mum lives). Also raised the concern that the passageway between the Market Place and Stert Street is a critical link for all businesses in town and always busy so possibly bringing trays of hot drinks through may be a hazard. However from a business perspective would love to see tables and chairs on Stert Street as it would extend the ‘cafe culture’ round the corner!
Thanks, Jackie / Hester. I’ll be sampling those two. In the name of ‘research’ obviously. 😉
