Who maintains the Thames Path?

Thames Path
Craig wrote ” I notice as I walk (most days with the dog) along the south side of the Thames from the bridge to the lock that as you approach the gate at the lock there’s a 20 metre section which hasn’t been treated with any rubble/hard standing. Surely it wouldn’t be expensive. With only a small amount of rain it quickly turns to slippery mud. I think that as the winter progresses, this bit will become impassable (and a health and safety hazard?).”

Does anybody know who maintains the Thames Path so Craig can direct his request at the right agency or council or voluntary group.

I do know that the muddy path on the other side of the weir is the responsibility of the Vale of White Horse District Council. They are waiting for the Abingdon Hydro to be built, or the path would need remaking twice.

Thanks to Backstreeter for raising this. I just feel that, based on last winter’s experience, this bit of the path leading to the gate will become very treacherous, particularly for older folks. Any ideas who to contact re this?

The path through from the lock to the Abbey gardens is also in a shocking state. its very hard to cycle (it is part of the national cycle route) or push a buggy along, it has more or less fallen apart in the past two years. Same over the bridge into Barton Meadow. All that is left of the path is some gravel which will no doubt get washed away once the flood levels come up. Sad to see the amenities deteriorate along this busy route.

On the subject of footpaths, does anyone know why 2 signs have been put up in the field by the old skate park/next to the Radley Road roundabout – they say ‘no footpath’? It’s not clear where they are referring to and it’s where everyone walks their dogs.

@Elsie, what does the Ordnance Survey map show? Some landowners have been know to attempt to close down public rights of way by erecting such signs…. It may not be the case here, but it does seem a bit sudden!
