Flood Warning

Tesco carpark is underwater. People were being hurried out from 9:30 PM. A tide of water was coming across the carpark from the direction of the River Ock.

This all happened within minutes. It must have taken everybody by suprise.

The environment agency has a Flood Warning out for the River Ock: Flooding expected affecting homes, businesses and main roads. Act now!

If Tesco is such a caring employer it should be contacting staff advising them NOT to try and get to work. Staff have been told if they dont go to work they have to use a days holiday – As they say on their adverts on TV "Every little helps"

Would it be worth making the trip in tomorrow, I'm trying to decide whether to risk going in.
They are saying on the news they are expecting a surge…dont want to get stranded.

To be fair, they wouldn't let me in to work, but then I was only supposed to be working overtime today…

In their defence they made a huge path out of empty wheelie cages going across the entrance to the petrol station/garden centre that would have been very easy to walk across without getting wet feet, unless you happen to be wider than about a meter.
Though when I went down to check the water level an hour or two ago the platforms on the cages were mostly underwater.
I'm supposed to be working tomorrow morning too… LOLZ

unbelievable! having to get your own sand bags! having to go to work! all this self pity makes me sick. some people have lost everything, some businesses have lost thousands! think yourselves lucky! besides why should tesco give their staff a day off full paye when it is completely out of their control?! either waid through the water and work or take a holiday! simple as that!

They dont care about staff, all tesco care about is £££!

I totally agree. The Fire Brigade did nothing on saturday evening apart from watch distressed people fill their own sandbags.I personally watched them laughing at a couple of young women trying to get sandbags in their car. I saw the guy drunk in a fire uniform. It was only when I saw him in the oxford mail today that I was able to put a name to him.I have reported him to Fire HQ in Oxford and to the local media. I was shocked at the attitude. You are quite right. They are not heros..but zeros

Hi from New Zealand. Commiserations with your terrible floods. I have relies in Oxford and Abingdon/Radley,so am keepng a close eye on Oxfordshire. We are just cleaning up after our own horrendous flooding in the our Far North. One small town may have to be re-located.

Keep your chins up, and keep Smiling.

You should be safe in Saxton Road. There are houses down near the river so you might want to look at flood maps if considering those. But this year they looked safe.

I am intersted in a property in the Saxton Raod area. Has there been flooding there or is there likely to be? What steps are being taken to prevent it happening again does anyone know?

    Hi Backstreeter,
I would delete those comments that name the fireman, if I were you. It is not people power, it is mob rule.

    A couple of things:

    i) The accusation about this man being drunk on duty are just that, accusations. In the main report it says nothing about him at all, it is only in the comments that he is mentioned. These are unsubstantiated accusations, I am surprised the Oxford Mail has left them up.

Has he been disiplined? If so what was the outcome? If it was found that he was either a) not on duty and/or b) not drunk you have a very serious incorrect statement about this man that could have an affect on him in the future.

ii) Screw the people that say it is censorship/big brother/cowardice to delete these comments.
Free speech does not include the right to libel someone. Challenge people to prove what they say, and if they can provide a source, in this case it would probably be another news report as a fireman drunk on duty in the middle of a flood would be a great story, then leave teh comment up.

Whilst your blog is hosted by google with the servers in the USA, you have some protection from the USs' more reasonable libel laws, we are all still mere mortals and do not have the resources to go through a libel case so it is best to err on the side of caution.

No body is stopping these peoples freedom of speech, after all, how long does it take to start a blogspot blog, eh?

Oh, and thanks for showing me some areas of my home town I hadn't seen before.
