There were sail boats and rowing boats on the River Thames in Abingdon this morning, but unlike a year ago no steam was rising from the giant cooling towers of Didcot ‘A’ Power Station. The coal fired Didcot ‘A’ Power Station has been decommissioned and some of its transformers have already been transported away. The cooling towers, love them or hate them, will soon be gone.
More efficient, and less visible, gas powered generators have taken over at Didcot.
In France, the cooling towers would probably have been painted and lost their grey monolithic quality. Each to her/his own – but I quite like the French approach.
I shall be sad. They are a friendly landmark for the return of a journey, or when I set out from home in the morning.
When the towers are gone. will the clouds have those tower shaped formations in them?

I don’t think that the smaller chimney on the right will be goning – I think that belongs to Didcot B.
Be interesting to see their demolition..It is planned some of them will be ‘detonated’/imploded. The others nearer to buildings may have to be taken apart, manually from the top down. Wonder who will pick the bricks up and sell online??.
As someone who sees exactly that view most mornings I’m very much looking forward to the demolition.
They may be an eysore but when you’re coming down the m40 and see them as you approach junction 7 you know you aren’t far from home. In a funny way I’ll miss them, also when walking on the Ridgeway they provide a point of reference.
