On Saturday there was the Mayor’s junior fishing competition, and today, on August Bank Holiday Monday, there was the senior competition. The Mayor of Abingdon presents the prizes at both.

The day was overcast with occasional showers. Fishermen were to be seen from near Abingdon Lock to opposite the sailing club on Wilsham Road.

The person with the heaviest catch wins so even little tiddlers get kept. All fish are released after weighing.

Horse Riding Events in Abingdon – 2012 and 1767

Horse Eventing in Abingdon Compared
The Abingdon Horse Show took place today. This well organised event features six riding arenas, some for show jumping and others for leading horses by hand, or more dressage style events.

The day was so hot that owners could be seen trying to keep their horses shaded as much as possible. I dare say there could have been even more competitors if it had not been so hot.

I watched show jumping in one riding arena. Most of the jumps had horizontal bars, in doubles or singles, which the horses jumped with ease, but one particular wavey bar caused a lot of problems – like jumping a visual illusion.

There were fun events such as fancy dress or the horse and hounds pictured above. First the hound had to jump round then the horse.

In times gone by Abingdon Races were held not far from this spot on Culham Heath. The 2 to 3 days of horse racing were held on what was then unenclosed land, near the River Thames. Press cuttings from the time give us a picture of those days. For example from entries in Jackson’s Journal from Sept 19. 1767. we can read that as well as the races on the “Fine Racing Ground” where “Horses may be seen quite round from an easy Eminence” there was also afterwards “a concert at the Council Chamber“, “a New Four Wheeled Post-Chaise raffled at the Crown and Thistle” and “A Cock Match at the New Inn, in Abingdon.”

Our town has an amazing Heritage. Some people even claim it is the oldest continually inhabited town in the country.

Abingdon Pigeon Discovers GooSki

Abingdon Pigeon Discovers GooSki
Thanks to Robert for this report …

‘I observed this strange phenomenon off Margaret Brown Gardens in Abingdon on Monday 24th July at 1800 hrs.

The pigeon in the photo had tried a number of times to land on the back of a Canada Goose and succeeded on the seventh attempt.

I have seen people using jet ski’s, but never a pigeon using a “GooSki.”

Missing Facebook Dog Found

Facebook Dog Found
I got an email from Karen a day ago asking whether I had been following the story of the missing dog that Abingdon facebook users were trying to track down …

There followed some extracts

…..Just to let everyone know the dog on the loose since Wednesday is still at large !!! It was being taken from rescue, as company for another family dog, but escaped when getting out of the car ! It’s black & white and fairly long haired and seems to have sussed out Boxhill Park and the surrounding area as it has been sighted sleeping in various gardens and under the shelter and knows it’s way around all of the local roads/gardens/woods…

…..There was a lady trying to catch it when I went to pick the boys up from school this afternoon. From what I heard, she only got it today and it doesn’t have a name yet and hasn’t got to know her yet…..

I was about to do a blog on the missing dog but then got a picture and message to show all was OK …

The dog was captured last night and taken to a vet who returned her, they have now called her cookie as she was a tough cookie to catch.
