The Vale of White Horse District Council presented 3 and 4 Regiments Royal Logistics Corps with the freedom of the Vale from 2016.

The regiments exercised this freedom with a parade through Abingdon on Saturday 1 October 2016, and were accompanied by the The Band of the Royal Logistic Corps.

Oxfordshire’s Lord-Lieutenant, Tim Stevenson, inspected the troops as the Queen’s representative. And Councillor Mike Badcock was there as Chairman of the Vale of White Horse District Council. The regiments already had the freedom of the Town of Abingdon, and now have the freedom of the Vale.

3 and 4 Logistic Support Regiments are based at Dalton Barracks in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The Regiments are responsible for a variety of logistical support roles, that primarily involve supply and transport and combat support.

The parade began at 10:50 from Ock Street Fire Station. The troops were inspected at the Market Place, and then went to the Roysse Room for refreshments.

World-renowned polar explorer Pen Hadow will be visiting Abingdon on Thursday 6th October to give a public lecture at the Amey Theatre. This is the start of a series of adventure and exploration themed public talks in Abingdon with the simple of aim of giving the local community the chance to hear some remarkable people. There are two events lined up at the Amey Theatre this Autumn; the first is Pen’s talk followed by a second talk from Everest mountaineer Stephen Venables at the end of the November.

This advert is from Marie in Abingdon sixty years ago, at a time when the business was just twenty years old.

There is a ten day exhibition in Abingdon Museum celebrating eighty years of Marie, the boutique in Bath Street Abingdon. The exhibition features corsets and lingerie dating back to Victorian times. There are also old photographs and artifacts from the original Marie shop.

Over the weekend the Friends of Shippon held an event called ‘Let’s Celebrate Shippon’ at the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene. The church looks very similar to St Michael and All Angels in Abingdon, and was built just a few years earlier in 1855. The village of Shippon near the church would be recognisable to people 100 years ago. Farm implements at the back of the church linked with those times.

With the coming of RAF Abingdon, which then became Dalton Barracks, the newer part of Shippon was dominated by the airfield and housing for the forces. The church porch celebrates the RAF being there. And a window in the church shows the life of a Padre at Dalton Barrack.

Another church window celebrates the 2121 Abingdon Air Cadets who are still going strong.

There was also a montage of village life with a Summer Fayre; posters showed dances, drama, the WI, and the annual book sale at the church. The Friends of Shippon run a Bridge Club, Book Club, and Singing for Pleasure Club.
