Trees Planted near Abingdon Weir

Trees Planted
Trees have been planted where land was cleared in preparation for the construction of Abingdon Hydro next to Abingdon Weir.

In the end the environmental project to generate electricity from the Thames in Abingdon did not add up economically.

One quote was received when the project was put out to tender, and that came in at £3.1m- far too high for the scheme to be viable.

£870,000 had been raised from 420 investors. After costs for architects, accountants and other consultants, investors will get back 86p for each £1 invested.

Peep-O-Day Lane thin track in the middle

Peep-O-Day Lane
Caroline wanted to share the good work of one man. He was frustrated with the state of Peep-O-Day Lane which has become overgrown and covered in mud, and so he has undertaken the task of clearing it himself this bank holiday for cyclists and walkers as it had been reduced down to just a thin track in the middle. He has a shovel and a broom and is clearing the whole path all the way down, as you can see in the picture attached. Caroline thought it was inspirational as it shows what can be done if you are willing to give a little bit of your own time.

Cleaning the Stream for The Queen

Local Clean Up
Local people from Overmead, and Metcalfe Close were clearing up the rubbish around their area (in South Abingdon) this morning. They helped clear the stream running alongside the field at the bottom of Overmead. And when I passed by, they had already retrieved a child’s buggy, Christmas tree, four footballs, and a few bags of lesser rubbish.

There were also volunteers clearing the path that leads to the the sports fields on Lambrick Way.

It was part of a national initiative by Keep Britain Tidy called ‘Clean for the Queen’.

Abingdon Hydro Project will not go ahead

Abingdon Hydro
The Abingdon Hydro project was launched in 2010, with the aim of harnessing the power of the Thames at Abingdon Weir to make enough electricity for at least 200 homes.

The project’s model Archimedes Screw became a feature at many events promoting the project.

The project plans were first approved by the environment agency and district council in 2012. The share launch was at the end of 2014, and gained 420 community members who invested over £800K. Enthusiatic volunteers started clearing the land in February this year.

But finances and the clock have been against the project, and directors have decided not to go ahead.

Time was running out if the project was to be financially viable as it depended on getting the enhanced electricity tariff. The complexity of regulations slowed progress. Recent tax changes made it less attractive for additional investors to buy shares. And finally, the build price was higher than anticipated.
