St Helen’s Powercut

At about 8:30pm we got a call from our daughter, who lives in St Helens Mill, saying they had a powercut. We were not affected, but stepping outside I was in darkness and nearly bumped into somebody coming up the path.

Walking round I found the powercut affected most of the town centre roads with St Helen in their name, below the Co-op.

Candles lit up some evening meals, and pedestrians found there way using mobile phone torches. The old anchor had lamps outside.

It was strange that it did not affect our house. Shows we can all be wired differently.

The World Comes to St Ethelwold’s House

St Ethelwold's House
The world arrived in a wheelchair having had a difficult week, but this event at St Ethelwold’s called ‘A Celebration of Summer’ tried to put that right.
St Ethelwold's House
There were songs of Peace and Social Justice by the Seagreen Singers
St Ethelwold's House
and circle dancing as people sat out on the lawn at St Ethelwold’s House enjoying the music, the tea and cakes.

This was followed by a time in the Sanctuary listening to the words of some of the great teachers of this world. By the end of the afternoon we hope the world is feeling more resilient and able to cope with whatever next week brings.

Lake ?

Radley Lakes
Radley’s former Lakes H and I were filled in with PFA ash from Didcot A Power Station in 2005. Until recently there has been a high fences all the way round H and I. Now there are lower fences, but people are still warned not to enter because of soft ground and deep water.
Radley Lakes
Lifebuoys have gone missing at some locations round the former lakes, but there are other lifebuoys in case anybody does climb the fence and get into difficulties in the boggy ash.
Radley Lakes
Silver Birch trees are colonising a lot of the former lakes. The Birch is a very successful native tree, a pioneer species that prepares the land for other greater trees to follow.
Radley Lakes
At one time there were a lot of Radley Lakes (Lakes A-P ) created by gravel extraction.

One small lake alongside H/I was not given a letter and did not need saving by a campaign. It has been left to its own devices. Lake ?

Where you can sometimes see Deer Near Abingdon Town Centre

Ock Valley Walk
On the Ock Valley walk there was one half of a big willow tree came down over the weekend.
Ock Valley Walk
Lots of new trees have been planted by members of the Green Gym in previous years at the town end of the path. They will provide good cover for wildlife in years to come.
Ock Valley Walk
This year, on their first outing after Easter, 18 people, with the Green Gym, spread wood chip on the path, and litter picked the Ock Valley Walk. A programme for people interested in exercising to make a difference with the Green Gym is here.

And by the way this is a deer that crossed the Ock Valley Walk, crossed the River Ock, and then escaped into the gardens of St Amand Drive on the other side.
