Abingdon Fair – Sunday – with church services at start and end

Abingdon Fair - Sunday
Bishop Elias of South Sudan – the newest country on the planet – was preaching at Abingdon Baptist Church this morning. He was hidden for three days in the jungle at birth because of the civil war; recruited at 12 as a child soldier; educated at a refugee camp in Uganda; arrested by the people’s liberation army and sentenced to a firing squad; now a bishop, he is dedicated to building schools and hospitals in his homeland. He said “All we need is a small push at first and then WE’LL start rolling.”

(And, on a minor note, he had to find his way through Abingdon Fair to get to the Baptist Church for the service at 10am this morning.)
Abingdon Fair - Sunday
Outside preparations for Abingdon Fair were well under way.

The Helter Skelter was being slotted together section by section.

Horses were taken out from where they are packed like sardines in a van to be hung on the Carousel of Galloping Horses.
Abingdon Fair - Sunday
Abingdon Fair is one of the longest Street Fairs in the UK and probably the longest along such a narrow town centre / residential street. In places the margins for error are small with buildings so close.

Later on, with most of the hard work done, there was another church service  to welcome and bless the Fair. It ended with a ride on the Carousel.

Abingdon Fun Fair grew out of the hiring fairs set up in Medieaval times to help regulate the labour market.

Abingdon Autumn Craft Fair – Week 1

Craft Fair
The Abingdon Autumn Craft Fair is held in the Medieval Abbey Buildings, off Checker Walk, in Abingdon. We have just come to the end of the first week.
Craft Fair
A Craft Fair was first held in the Medieaval Buildings in 1970. During the 1970s the craft fairs got larger and from 1980 until very recently were organised by Mrs Pauline Burren, on behalf of the Friends of Abingdon who own the buildings.
Craft Fair
Pauline still organises volunteers to man the Friends of Abingdon stall at the Craft Fair, but the organisation of the fair has passed on to the Abingdon Craft Fair and Design Limited. You may have seen their van.
Craft Fair
The Craft Fair, and other activities like weddings, help to pay for maintenance and improvements to the Medieaval Abbey Buildings.

There is another Craft Fair next weekend, from Thur. 27 – Sun. 30 October, and the weekend after – Fri 4th Nov – sees the first new Folk at the Unicorn – in the Unicorn Theatre alongside the Medieaval Abbey Buildings.

The Runaway Fair

The Runaway Fair
A week after the Michaelmas Fair the High Street is closed again for the traditional Runaway Fair. This is one of two annual Abingdon events that divert the 35 bus (and the X2 X3… ) down East St Helen Street and up West St Helen Street.

Can you name the other?
The Runaway Fair
In the days when people looked for employment at fairs the Runaway Fair was the chance to escape a bad employer taken on at the Michaelmas Fair, and try to find another.
The Runaway Fair
During the Michaelmas Fair,  last week, the Tattoo Parlour on High Street was doing a lively trade late into the evenings. They have not attempted to stay open late for the Runaway Fair.
The Runaway Fair
Nowadays the runaway fair has children’s rides and amusements that carry on through the afternoon and early evening.

Clearing up after the Fair

Abingdon Fair
I got back to Abingdon at 1:45 am, having been busy elsewhere, and so missed the 2nd evening of the fair.

By 2 am there were just a couple of trailers being attached to lorries on the Market Place. Elsewhere all was clear but the road not yet opened : Street Sweepers were driving back and forth clearing up the debry …

So no pictures from Tuesday, just some of the more surreal pictures from Monday instead …
Abingdon Fair
I took this one into the Bellinger’s Sign: left side reflected, right side real.
Abingdon Fair
Cuddly animals on one side. Monsters over the road.
Abingdon Fair
Toffee apples.
Abingdon Fair
Un Fair.

The Fair may have gone, but the runaway fair will be here next weekend, as will the Apple Day at Caldecott School, and the Abingdon Marathon. So lots happening next weekend in and around Abingdon.
