2013 Day 5 – Floods are Gone but Barriers Remain

2013 day 5 - dry so far
Some people have started to ignore the barriers that are still in position either end of the Ock Valley Walk.
2013 day 5 - dry so far
The water no longer covers the path, and so there seems no real danger. My guess is that somebody in authority has just forgotten to remove the barriers. But it does allow the birds a few more days without human disturbance.
2013 day 5 - dry so far
News reports did say that 2012 was the second wettest year since records began.

2013 has started dry so hopefully that record will not be broken this year. The River Thames has returned to normal levels leaving the sandbags high and dry.

Flooding Continues – two days on

Flooding Continues
The level of the flood water has remained high over the last 48 hours, and the blue floodgate by St Helen’s Wharf is still needed. I don’t think either river got quite as high as last month but the spread of water over the flood plain is less predictable.
Flooding Continues
Water continues to pour under Maud Hale’s Bridge, and any other opening. Tomorrow’s match at Abingdon Town F.C has been called off as the pitch is under a foot or more of water.
Flooding Continues
The causeway to Culham has water on both sides.
Flooding Continues
There is a watery view back across the fields from the causeway to Abingdon School boathouse, the Marina, and Wilsham Road.
Flooding Continues
Along Wilsham Road there is still some way to go before the boats are at the same level as the cars.
Flooding Continues
But nobody is risking their car at the Marina car park at present. Water continues to pour through the gate with some force.

The 2012 Christmas Floods

Christmas 2012 Floods
The Ock Valley Walk was closed on Christmas Eve because of the flooding, and the Margaret Brown Garden was closed, possibly, because of the council’s fear of people falling into the River Thames.
Christmas 2012 Floods
So walks on Christmas Day and Boxing Day have been restricted. Lots of people have gone to look at the floods from places like Abingdon Bridge and the Abbey Grounds.
Christmas 2012 Floods
The environment agency said earlier today that “The River Thames continues to rise slowly in the Abingdon area. Levels are expected to be less than or similar to those seen during November 2012“.

More rain, from 5 – 10mm, is predicted by the Met Office for tomorrow (Thursday).

Flood Pictures from Kim, Bob, Spike, and Luke

I’ve been working away from Abingdon this week so I was grateful to be sent some daytime pictures by kim, Bob, Spike, and Luke.
Flood Pictures
Kim sent me “a couple of people making the best of the floods.”
Flood Pictures
Bob sent me ‘My Scots mate is saying”I’m marooned!”‘
Flood Pictures
Spike sent me this pictures taken from his canoe – at 4pm today.

When I got home about three hours later water was washing over the pavement of St Helen’s Wharf.
Flood Pictures
The River Thames has finally reached the O and the Old Anchor Inn has not Opened. The Ock water levels are going down apart from the lower end. St Helen’s Mill is surrounded by water worse than I’d imagined.
Flood Pictures
Finally I was sent this dramatic picture from Luke’s iPhone. I’d like to feature more pictures but could run out of bandwidth this month. It was very close last month. If that happens back on December 1st with the Extravaganza.
