MGB 50th anniversary celebration – 10 MGBs on display in Abingdon

Eve of MGB 50
MGB enthusiasts and retired workers from the MGB production line in Abingdon  will be meeting at Blenheim Palace for the 50th anniversary of the MGB tomorrow.

It was first launched in September 1962 and ceased production in October 1980.

This afternoon ten MGBs assembled on the Market Place in Abingdon, and others were to be seen driving, or parked, in town today.

The last MGB to be produced, painted bronze, is on fairly permanent display at Abingdon Conty Hall Museum.

A double treat for MG fans

MG Car Rallys
MG fans were able to enjoy not just one but two MG Rallys on the Market Place today – and what a glorious day it was. In the morning there were about 50+ MGs who spent the weekend in Abingdon, supporting local hotels and businesses, and visiting Kimber House and other local sites, before driving off to Bletchley Park.

First time I’d seen one of the new MG6s

or any of these Rover Built MG Super Cars.

The second Rally a few hours later brought a dozen or so Y series MGs built in Abingdon from 1947.

They were here to celebrate their 65th anniversary.

2012 will also be the 50th Anniversary of the MGB, and the MG Car Club want to gets lots of ex MG workers together for the MGB50 event.

Have you got the unclaimed lottery ticket?

Unclaimed Lottery
If you have the numbers 9,21,35,38,46,49 on a lottery ticket bought in Abingdon and the date says 18 Dec 2010 it will be worth £956,813.
Unclaimed Lottery
The national lottery have not said where it was purchased exactly, “because if it was bought in a small community we could compromise that person’s anonymity“. But I suspect the unclaimed ticket could well have come from this Abingdon newsagent.

The National Lottery have recruited the MG Car Club to drive a 1954 MG TF, 1959 MGA, 1965 MGB and 1972 MG Midget round to let people know of the unclaimed ticket. They will be going to the following places on Tuesday 15th February…
8.30am – Didcot Parkway
9.30am – Wantage
10.30am – Abingdon
11.15am – Finish at MG Car Club

I was wondering whether to set up a petition requesting the money go to local good causes if not claimed by June.

Ock mini Park finally starts to look like The MG Park

MG Park
Earlier in the year the small park, previously known as the Ock Mini Park, between the Drayton and Marcham Road was cleared, and new plants put in beneath the wall. Now the first real sign of its new identity has been become visible. The outline of a large octagon was created a couple of weeks ago…
MG Park
and this week it has been filled with a MG Mosaic.

Paths, landscaping, and information boards are to be added in this collaboration between MG Car Club and Abingdon Town Council.
