The Weather has been Wild and Wonderful this Week

For three days in a row, warm sunny days were followed by thunderstorms.  The storms cooled things down and flattened a few plants, but by next morning the weather warmed up again.

Yesterday (Monday), a few of us got caught under the Abbey Gateway during a downpour. The rain was heavy for a few minutes, and the rumbles of thunder were sometimes continuous.

I took a short video of the storm, which you can see below. There is no lightening strike …

There’s a law against splashing pedestrians

After heavy rain on March 31st, more rain is expected on April 1st. So it is a good time to remind drivers they can be hit with a £100 fixed penalty notice and three penalty points if caught by the police splashing pedestrians.

Under section three of the Road Traffic Act 1988, splashing pedestrians can be considered driving ‘without reasonable consideration for other persons.’

Covering of snow

There was a light covering of snow at the start of the day in Abingdon, as shown in St Helen’s churchyard. After 9 am the snow soon melted. Snow and rain continued to fall throughout the day.

P.S. That is blossom on that tree.

A foggy rush hour

St Helen’s Church was barely visible at 8:51 this morning because of the fog.

Traffic queued back along West St Helen Street. A minibus – full of children with hi-viz vests – was on its way to school. They were probably late, as were the people going to work.

The traffic slowly moved over the iron bridge from Wilsham Road and Caldecott Road. Some cars turned on Wilsham Road to try to find an alternative route. But everybody seemed patient and resigned to being a bit late. They let others in at junctions, and there was no hysterical beeping of horns.

Within an hour, the road traffic and the fog had cleared. Children were at school, adults were at work, and the sky was blue.
