Snow and then rain fell on Abingdon this morning. The snow settled on car roofs but not on the pavements.

Undeterred by the snow, Abingdon Rowing Club had a number of boats out on the river. About twenty minutes after taking this picture, I saw Adam – with the yellow top – at Trinity Church.

Adam was on the sound desk , and I was on the projector. Nowadays, nost people sing the songs off the projector screen rather than from the hymn book. Adam said the rowing was ‘cold but fun.’ He is an ex boy scout / boy scout leader. It still took him some time to warm up his hands, as his seat and the carpet round about got more and more damp.

After church the snow had turned to rain – which was no fun at all.

Last of the Snowmen

There were a few piles of snow remaining this evening. At the end of Preston Road I saw one boy trying to re-make his snowman from a pile of snow alongside.
Snowmen not only had above-zero temperatures to contend with, there was also the rain.

It was pouring down by the time I got to Waitrose, where I heard the festive sound of Abingdon Town Band playing Christmas Carols.

Christmas lights could be seen above and below the road with the High Street layby underwater.
Advent Day 10 – Snowy Sunday

It was snowing at 7am. The weather forecast had predicted snow but I never expect snow to really happen.

Here is Belsky’s mother and child in the snow. Elsewhere there were lots of real parents out with their children, playing snowballs and with sledges.

The paths and roads got very slippery as the snow continued to fall. Cars and even buses could not always get traction. Walking sticks and ski sticks looked very sensible.

The world had turned black and white with just a few touches of colour.

At Trinity, there were less people than usual. Geoff Caudle from Drayton led the service. He did well to get there.

After church I began to see snowmen. There were two next to Abingdon Baptist Church.

Down in the Abbey Meadows somebody had sculpted a mermaid from the snow.

On another bench sat a snowman.
The snow stopped for the first time at 2 pm.
Runaway Fair

The Abingdon ‘Runaway Fair’ was held today in the Market Place and along the High Street.

Remnants of last week’s Michaelmas Fair returned for one day: children’s rides, fun houses, and stalls. The pictures are after the fair was set up – on a warm clear sunny Sunday.

Monday was a strange day, warm, with a yellow tinge to the clouds, and the wind growing. The news reported that sand has been blown from the Sahara by storm Ophelia.
