At the Marcham Road entrance into Abingdon, this Abingdon shield has been made with plants, to celebrate the 450th Anniversary.

Near at hand are theses stacked planters with Abingdon in Bloom displays.

This skip near Twickenham House down East St Helens Street reminded me of the poem by James Fenton.

(For anybody from the the States a “Skip” is a “dumpster”)

I took my life and threw it on the skip,
Reckoning the next-door neighbors wouldn’t mind
If my life hitched a lift to the council tip
With their dry rot and rubble. What you find
With skips is – the whole community joins in.
Old mattresses appear, doors kind of drift
Along with all that won’t fit in the bin
And what the bin-men can’t be fished to shift…

Here the Abingdon Traditional Morris Dancers dance round a lady volunteer from the crowd.

The election of the Mayor of Ock Street happened today. This involved morris dancing all around the town. All residents of Ock Street were eligible to vote and the Ballot Box was counted at the Brewery Tap in Ock Street at 4 PM. The re-elected Mayor of Ock Street, Stuart Jackson, is shown above next to the Mayor of Abingdon.

There were visiting dancers:

Bampton Traditional Morris Men
Chipping Camden Morris Men.
