Last time I went to Radley Lakes there was a notice from the Earth Trust saying they were assessing the damage to see whether it was worth attempting to repair the beautiful Lily Shelter.
It was built in August 2010 and has survived three winters, and has been used as a shelter and bird hide, often by young people who have treated it well.
But then it just takes one or two, of any age, to ruin things for everybody else – as happens in life.
We returned there today and can assume it was not worth repairing, and then re-repairing.
Heart breaking , so very sad , many used the structure and loved it and many like me ran past it and ust marvelled at itsbeauty, looking over the lake as if it was ready to take off.
A bad day for Abingdon
How sad. This is the first time I’ve heard of the Lily Shelter, but it looks fascinatingly like its name.
Sadly I think this was wholly inevitable. When I first saw it built I remember thinking “I’d be surprised if that lasted long”. Actually it lasted longed than I thought. Sad loss.
I know Radley lakes had a development grant to improve the facilities and access and security to the site. I hope they can rebuild the shelter or one similar it was a nice place to walk to and stop for a coffee and just look at all that wildlife.
But as has been said only takes a one to spoil things for the many.
That’s really sad. It was such a lovely structure.
We too were disappointed to see that the lily was no more when we arrived at the lakes seeking shelter on Friday.
Fortunately we didn’t get too wet though and we picked a good few pounds of blackberries on the circular path on the way home.
Very sad. Does Radley Lakes have money to rebuild it? I hope so. Does anyone know?/Can anyone find out?
Sad to see it wasn’t given any sort of reprieve, plus a good coating of wood preservative. I noticed when last inside the building, that the internal shape/space created a fascinating amplified sound effect on one’s voice, at head height, directly underneath the apex of the roof. The children had great fun with this.
