A Summer Evening Concert

The warm weather is still here and so it was good to go to a summer evening concert at St Nicolas Church, Abingdon.

Abingdon Community Orchestra performed during the first half. They were established two years ago by the Abingdon Music Centre as a way of getting people of all ages and abilities to play music. Donations were welcomed towards the Music Centre.

They were followed by a choir from twin town Sint-Niklaas in Belgium. Earlier this week they performed at Oxford’s Cathedral at Christ Church, and then did a workshop at Larkmead School in Abingdon.

In the audience at St Nics were 18 people from our twin towns over on an English learning visit. The Mayor was also there to watch the performances and received from Dieter, the conductor of the choir, some of their CDs.

Abingdon is twinned with some interesting places on the continent. Sint-Niklaas is just one. Their choir were excellent.

In Dulci Jubilo were absolutely superb – what a privilege to hear them sing.
A big thank-you to Helen Eccleston for arranging these performances.

The 18 visitors from the Twin Towns who are here for the Language Week organised by the Twin Towns Society working with Abingdon and Witney College enjoyed the concert by the Sint Niklaas choir very much. They go back to Lucca, Sint Niklaas, Colmar and Schongau this weekend. The comments they have made about the friendly, beautiful town and the people they have met in the course of the week have been so positive. They all now know about the Abingdon Blog and this will be one of the ways they will be keeping in touch with what is happening in Abingdon

I’m sorry to have missed this though we had a very happy concert for Christian Aid at St. Helen’s with the South Oxfordshire Young Singers, the Abingdon Ladies afternoon choir and the Didcot Divas.
The Sint Niklaas choir seemed to be mostly young men or boys; our own choirs at St. Helen’s were almost entirely female; we seem to be unable to get men and boys into choral singing here! (Our trad. Male Voice men are getting on a bit, too).
