Normally Meteorite is next to Body Count in front of St Nic’s church.
But this year Body Count was at the far end of Ock Street almost a mile away. The Abingdon Street Fair is that long.
The Fair did look a little thin in places yesterday, during the setup, but rides have arrived since then. The Nottingham Goose Fair was still on up until yesterday.
Late in the day Super Bob appeared in the Car park of the White Horse Pub, and Froggit has appeared in front of the Tower Close Flats.
Another difference this year is that the County Hall is still mostly under wraps – undergoing the museum improvements and half-century building maintenance job.
The twirling light shone up into the sky by Hebborn’s Waltzer, from Oxford, gave quite a different effect when it lit up the corner of the County Hall – this year.
The Prince of India joined in the spirit of the Fair by serving takeaways from the pavement. The Dil Raj handed out menus.
Dads carried tired toddlers on shoulders…
while Teenagers tried out more and more daring rides.
There was a little wind about, and a very fine shower late in the evening, but conditions were good. There were lots of people but not the normal crush.
Traffic from South Abingdon was very heavy during the early morning rush.
I love the fair! Never been on any of the rides, but every year we walk the whole length of Ock Street. It seemed less busy than last year, but I think we were fairly early.
I hope that other visitors were spending more money than us!
I have only moved to Abingdon a short time ago and so, not knowing what to expect, I was really amazed by the Fair. I could not have imagined how they would fit it into those narrow streets. It was fantastic to see so many people out and about enjoying themselves in Abingdon. Long may this tradition continue. Much better ambience in the town rather than stuck out on a field somewhere.
We too didn’t go on the rides but walked along Ock Street. It was lovely to see so many different ages of people all enjoying themselves. Lovely atmosphere!
i love the fair. always have… it makes me laugh that you see all the parents of chilldren being dragged round, so the minute they turn to a teenager, the parents stay away!
i went to see it being set up on the sinday, but am going tonight for the rides….
hopefully this year i will be able to win a giant meercat!
Ours are teenagers now – so we walk Ock Street in the opposite direction to them to see if we can meet them and embarrass them in front of their mates!
So how come it’s not raining? When i used to have to go it always rained on the one night we planned to go.
