A Couple of Centimetres of Rain and a Lot to Be Thankful For

Today brought a fair amount of rain. A local canoeist estimated a rise of a “couple of centimetres” on her gauge at the steps by St Helen’s Wharf. The Abingdon Rainfall Gauge measured 15.3 mm. By the look of it, the local ducks didn’t mind. For the reservoirs and the River Thames alike, it was not a flood, but every drop helps as we still have a hosepipe ban.

It also had the effect of bringing down more of the leaves at St Helens Wharf and plastering them onto the road and seats and boats.

When I return along St Helen’s Wharf on a day like this — when the sun breaks through after the rain — I’m reminded how lucky we are to live here in Abingdon.

    Talking of water….

Has anyone else received a letter from Thames Water in the last week or so concerning SESRO?

We have, as apparently they have had to extend the area as to who might be affected, I live near Spring Road. They have to contact anyone who may have in interest in the land that might be negatively affected. They are asking for a lot of information, including mortgage information.

I’m reluctant to give them this but hard to articulate why. – has anyone else returned the completed form?

    Nice photos btw.

Have you asked them what they want this information for?
What will they do with this information?
What are the outcomes that they are investigating that this information helps?
    What is their GDPR policy?
How can they reassure you that their GDPR policy is robust?
What will happen to this information (of yours) when they have finished with it?

Apparently they have to do their due diligence by contacting all possibly affected landowners. I probably just won’t return the form.

Thanks for idea as to questions to ask.

But doesn’t diligence require clear explanation of reasons for the request made and information about how data gathered will be used?
“Due diligence” seems to mean little more than ticking a box to cover yourself if things don’t go quite as planned.

The Abingdon Rain Gauge (Gov.UK flood site) reports 215mm of rain between 3 and 4pm yesterday! Surely they must mean 21.5mm?
