Where Valerian Grows

At Spring Road Cemetery, the grass has been left to grow, along with wildflowers such as this valerian near the edge. Valerian is thriving this year — growing on walls, beside walls, and wherever it can find a gap at an edge. Its pink or red or white flower clusters attract bees.

It was growing by a cross that is at the edge of the cemetery – so near to the edge that a hedge is swallowing it up.

The valerian has s choice in where it grows, however, the choice in where people are buried in Abingdon Cemetary seems to be very limited. We wish to be buried and went to see about purchasing a grave site. We were told that the Council no longer allow that. A plot is allocated on death. We chose a place where we thought would be nice to be buried but all the new graves seemed to be in one spot and in very close rows and proximity to one another. I phoned the Town Council and was told that we have no choice in where we are buried. We have to go where we are put. It all seems so undignified and it reminded me of a plague pit.

Limited because space is limited. How could it possibly work if everyone started choosing their spot for possibly years later? You are able to reserve adjacent family spaces once one family member is there.

It may not be all bad – wait and see what you’re allocated and if you’re still not happy, raise a complaint.
