Two bells have appeared on the pavement outside St Nicolas Church. They are cemented in to the pavement and are not designed to ring.
They are there for pedestrian safety. ‘Bell Bollards‘ are shaped to ensure that vehicles, however big, mounting the pavement will be deflected back onto the road. They will also ensure delivery lorries do not stop on this part of the pavement.

Ding Dong! Presumably they are not a pedestrian hazard in the dark.
They have similar devices in Spain. You don’t need it to be dark for them to be a pedestrian hazard. I have the scars to prove it.
FOR THE VISIBLY IMPAIRED ABINGDON ON THAMES IS A NIGHTMARE..THE NUMBER OF BOARDS ON THE HIGH STREET AND BATH STREET AND WEST ST HELEN’S …MAKES LIFE VERY DIFFICULT AND NOW WE HAVE SOMETHING ELSE ADDED!!!!

They are not so much a hazard as cars and lorries parking there, forcing buggies and wheelchairs to go round them and blocking the view of people waiting to cross the street. Welcome the bells, I say.
I can’t agree with you John. Parked vehicles are much more visible to the visually impaired than these bells are. Walking into one leads to an inevitable fall. There is a controlled crossing point a few yards away so no- one should be crossing the road at that point- a wide crossroads – anyway.
If some measure were needed to prevent parking at that place then much safer would have been a metal barrier, as at other points around the square, or a set of waist high posts.
