The Freewheeling Halloween ride left the Market Place at around 7:15 this evening on a ride of about 15 miles. The instructions were to dress up as your favourite ghoul, zombify your bike, and bring cycle lights.
We had our first ever trick or treaters this evening – that is after living in West St Helen Street for five years. We used to get lots on the Tithe Farm estate.
Nice that your house was finally targeted by “Trick or Treaters” – but Hallowe’en is not until Sunday.
Yet another money/time wasting American import, I will ensure the entrance doors to our communal hall/flats are locked on that night. Bah! Humbug!!!! I also hate pumpkins!!!!!!!!!
Trick or treating actually dates back to the middle ages and is orgins are British! Its a myth that the yanks started it. It orginates from the medival practice of Souling.
Souling? Is where they dressed up as James Brown and danced through graveyards to ‘Get on Up, I’m a Sex Machine’?
If only! I’d go to the churchyard to see that…
Souling – A visiting custom carried out in the 19th and 20th centuries mainly by children, but previously by adults, in the Shropshire, north Staffordshire, Cheshire, and Lancashire area, on All Saints Day (1 November) and All Souls Day (2 November). The soulers visited houses, sang a song, and collected money, food, drink, or whatever was given to them.
Note the dates – NOT 31 October !!!!! Also no mention of Abingdon!!!!!!
So they definitely didn’t dress as Barry White and boom out ‘Mmmm, I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t why I can’t do without your love baby’ with backing singers and disco ball in a graveyard?
