Abingdon Community Fridge launch

There were two events this evening at the Abingdon Health and Wellbeing Centre, off Audlett Drive.
Abingdon Community Fridge Launch
There was the official launch of the Abingdon Community Fridge. The fridge takes unsold fresh food from local businesses, including Tesco, Waitrose, and The Co-op on Northcourt Road. The Mayor of Abingdon, Councillor  Charlie Birks, cut the ribbon.Abingdon Community Fridge Launch
The Mayor was afterwards pictured with some of the organisers. There were also volunteers and people from businesses. The scheme helps prevent food waste and, at the same time, can help people having a hard time to get good food.

The other event was a showing of the film Plastic Ocean put on by the ABCD Film Society and the Carbon Cutters.

The ABCD Film Society has a weekly programme of films.

Wisteria second flowering

Wisteria second flowering
The Wisteria at the Crown and Thistle is having a second flowering. It flowered back in May.

The bar used to be known as the Stocks as it had some wooden punishment stocks outside. It is now known as The Wisteria Pub. Wisteria has been growing for a long in the Crown and Thistle courtyard and this is the first time I have noticed a second flowering in September.

Abbey Meadow Lacemakers 25th Anniversary

Abbey Meadow Lacemakers
On Saturday 21st September Abbey Meadow Lacemakers (AML) held their annual Lacemakers day. Over 60 lacemakers from around Oxfordshire met together to make lace and celebrate their 25th anniversary.

In these days of mass production, there are still practitioners of skilled crafts and people who want to learn them.

The founder members, Gaby Lloyd and Elsie Wood cut the anniversary cake.

Abbey Meadow Lacemakers practice all needlecrafts as well as lacemaking and are always happy to see new members. They meet monthly on every 3rd Tuesday at Preston Road Community Centre. Details of their meetings and contact details can be found at www.abbeymeadowlacemakers.co.uk .
