A Summer Evening Concert

The warm weather is still here and so it was good to go to a summer evening concert at St Nicolas Church, Abingdon.

Abingdon Community Orchestra performed during the first half. They were established two years ago by the Abingdon Music Centre as a way of getting people of all ages and abilities to play music. Donations were welcomed towards the Music Centre.

They were followed by a choir from twin town Sint-Niklaas in Belgium. Earlier this week they performed at Oxford’s Cathedral at Christ Church, and then did a workshop at Larkmead School in Abingdon.

In the audience at St Nics were 18 people from our twin towns over on an English learning visit. The Mayor was also there to watch the performances and received from Dieter, the conductor of the choir, some of their CDs.

Abingdon is twinned with some interesting places on the continent. Sint-Niklaas is just one. Their choir were excellent.

Hydroelectricity from the Thames in Abingdon

hydroelectricity from the Thames
There has been a delay in generating hydroelectricity from the Thames in Abingdon. The district council asked the community group behind the scheme to give more details about the short term impact during the build phase.

More details have been given and the plans are back in for consideration. There is another week for comments about the application. Go to the district council’s web site, http://www.whitehorsedc.gov.uk/. Then type P13/V1315 in the search box. There are 8 reports and 16 drawings to look through. Lots of other community groups from fishermen to canoeists to walkers will be impacted.

If the go ahead is given then shares in the project will be offered to members of the community .

Over the last two years, students, staff, parents and other volunteer helpers have developed a purpose-build, bedding area. Local businesses have given materials and help. Abingdon Works Car Show – 2013

The Abingdon Works Car Show was on today in Rye Farm Meadow
Abingdon Works Car Show
The show celebrated the days when a lot of wonderful cars were made in Abingdon-on-Thames. The event was run in conjunction with the MG Car Club and Abingdon Rotary Club. But it was not all about MGs. Rileys are being admired in this picture.

The Abingdon works fire engine was there, as well as a modern day fire engine from Abingdon-on-Thames Fire Station.

This MG has a numberplate that almost says Abingdon Works.

Today was the day that Andy Murray won Wimbledon for the first time. The previous time a male player from these isles won the competition cars like these were on the road. The one in the foreground has done nearly 450,000 miles, although the clock does not show quite that much,as it starts again every 100,000 miles.

Such a hot day – a lot of the cars had their bonnets up, and on the other side of the River the open air pool and water feature were packed. The Rotary and all the MG Car Clubs made us proud of our Abingdon heritage.
